Any inexpensive kitchen storage ideas?

We have a large kitchen but very little usable storage space and it’s rather annoying. I really do like to have a place for everything, from dry goods, etc.

I plan on putting pull out drawers in our pantry. Otherwise I’m not sure what to do. I’ve got enough room for an island because half of the kitchen is open space, but they are very expensive. Any suggestions would be helpful.

if you have really nice pots and pans, like an expensive set that goes together, hang those above the stove on a rack, and use the cabnet you had your pans in for storage as well.

Have you looked into IKEA for island cabinets? They’re really very reasonable. We’ve flipped a couple of houses in the last fews years, and we’ve been very impressed with the price and quality of IKEA cabinets.

Another great product they have is a pull-out pantry cabinet. It’s the size of a regular pantry cabinet (you may be able to replace an existing cabinet with one), but it pulls out like a huge drawer so you can see the contents of the shelves all the way to the back. It’s pretty cool!

All in all, I’m a huge IKEA fan for kitchen ideas (can ya tell?) Check it out, and you may find you can afford more than you think.

Another great alternative to a fixed island is a rolling butcher block. They usually have drawers and/or shelves below for storage, and a workspace above.

An afterthought: you know what would make a really cool island? You could find an old dresser at a garage sale or flea market, paint it to coordinate with your kitchen, then cover it with countertop material that hangs over the backside of the dresser about 18 inches (laminate countertop is very affordable, but you could splurge maybe after saving all that money on the “cabinetry”). Add legs to that side to support the overhang, and use it for a breakfast bar.

Hmm . . . I like my idea! I wish my kitchen were big enough to do this!

    Best of luck!

Sometimes you can find cheap stuff at flea markets, thrift shops and yard sales.

I had no cabinets at all in my kitchen so I have had to improvise too. I have a bakers rack that I put a big square storage container w/ lid on the bottom for my pans and lids. The nice pots are hanging on the wall behind the stove. I recently aquired a white bathroom shelf that is tall and narrow that works well for my spices, oil and boxed foods. And I made shelves with l brackets and wood for the wall. Another thing is I took a metal rack and mounted it on the wall to hold my cutting boards. Good luck.
