This is the seventh video of a series I like to call the “Mitsuwa Tour”. I’ll be showing you my favorite Japanese import supermarket in Orange County. In this video: Leaving the dishware store, we wander by more videos from the video rental store and then see the Japanese bookstore. The bookstore spans an entire corner of the marketplace, selling books all in Japanese. They also sell CDs, and I recall buying one there a long time ago, and they gave me a generous discount due to it being the last copy and a display one at that. Moving on, there’s the health store, and an expensive high-end candy stall. From time to time they will set up a sale tent in the front of the market selling various items. Next to that is the cosmetics counter. We then enter the supermarket half of Mitsuwa, you can see fruits, vegetables, and even kitchen appliances for sale, most that wouldn’t be found in an American supermarket. I really enjoy Japanese packaging, as they use fun images and bold fonts on their products. Mitsuwa Marketplace can be found in Costa Mesa, CA

LG전자(066570, 대표 南鏞, www.lge.co.kr)가 ‘꽃의 화가’ 하상림 작가의 꽃 디자인을 적용한 ‘아트 플라워(Art Flower)’ 가전으로 100만 송이 꽃을 피웠다.

지난 ‘06년 ‘디자인 경영’을 선포한 LG전자가 이를 가시화한 첫 프로젝트로 순수예술과 가전을 접목한 ‘아트 플라워’ 냉장고를 선보였다.

‘06년 양문형 냉장고, 김치냉장고를 시작으로 ‘07년 세탁기, 에어컨, 식기세척기, 광파오븐, 공기청정기 등에 확대 적용하면서 아트가전 시리즈를 완성했다.

또 매년 새로운 느낌의 디자인으로 변화를 지속, 고객들의 호응을 얻은 결과 프로젝트 시작 2년 여 만인 지난 3월말 ‘아트 플라워’ 가전으로만 누적 판매량 100만대를 돌파했다.

이중 2006년 8월부터 판매된 냉장고가 70만대로 가장 많았고, 에어컨, 세탁기, 광파오븐, 공기청정기, 식기세척기가 그 뒤를 이었다.
‘아트 플라워’ 가전은 ‘꽃의 화가’ 하상림 작품의 꽃을 활용해 원작의 순수성을 살리면서도 절제, 세련미를 더해 가전 제품 전면 디자인에 적용, 예술성을 극대화했다.

또 ‘스와로브스키(SWAROVSKI)’ 크리스털과 LED조명 등을 활용해 평면적인 디자인에 조형미를 더했다.

이 프로젝트는 유행에 민감한 패션성을 탈피, 싫증나지 않고 화려하지 않은 하상림 작품 등 순수예술을 접목해 디자인의 새로운 장르를 열었다는 평가를 받고 있다.

또한 가전에 순수 예술을 접목, 가전을 하나의 작품화 한 차별화된 시도로, 이후 국내 산업 전반에 아트 마케팅과 꽃 문양 디자인 열풍을 일으켰다.

한편, LG전자는 조형예술가 김지아나, 함연주, 배인숙 등 예술작가와의 협력을 지속 확대하고 있다.

july 8, 2009 – A pre-post-script: we listed it on craigslist back in january and had about 6 serious viewings by people. although we weren’t vetting people per se, because we were showing it for our very nice landlord there was an element of trying to find someone good for the building. an initial couple who we liked a lot and wanted to have the apartment turned out to not have enough proof of income which was sad. the couple who took it finally seemed pretty nice and loved the how huge the kitchen was. one of them was a chef. i guess we should check back and see how it’s going. we just heard that a friend of a friend took the apartment next to this one that was also available. nice. the roomba (in the bottom-ish right corner) still kinda works. i need to take it apart completely and clean it out and i’m sure it’ll be fine. if you were ever curious – yes, they are awesome. you need one.

We hate to give it up, but we’re moving, and our great one bedroom apartment in Windsor Terrace (Brooklyn, NY) is for rent! This is a very large one bedroom, almost 1000 sq feet. There’s a large eat-in kitchen, and a huge living room/dining room. The bedroom is 16 x 10, and is far down the hall from the other rooms (that’s been great for having guests). The broker we used 2 years ago mentioned that the living room/dining room are so big, one of them could be used as the bedroom, and the actual bedroom could be used as a nursery/office/second bedroom. The closet space is amazing. There’s a large bedroom closet, with a ton of deep storage space ABOVE the closet. Bathroom also has built-in storage space (as well as a large cabinet). There’s a closet in the hallway that also has extra storage space above it. The kitchen, measuring 19 x 8, has a huge pantry for storage (we keep our bikes and air conditioners in there, as well as food and tons of other things), and many cabinets. The apartment was completely redone before we moved in two years ago–repainted, wood floors redone, all new appliances, and is in great shape. It’s a really beautiful apartment too, with carved Victorian woodwork separating the living and dining rooms, beautiful old fireplace and wooden mantle (fireplace isn’t operational), and 10 ft high ceilings. The building is clean, nice neighbors, and the ONLY good landlord we’ve ever had! Besides this being a great apartment, we’ve loved this location as well. We are right next to the Fort Hamilton subway station on the F line which has been really handy, and the best part–only 3 short blocks from Prospect Park! The neighborhood is quiet and extremely safe, and is just 1 or 2 stops from different locations in Park Slope. And if you’ve ever been to Park Slope, you know there are many reasons to visit, but few to actually live there. Our landlord isn’t raising the rent–it will continue to be 75 a month. No broker or other fees of any kind for this apartment, just a security deposit. Stop by our open house this Sunday, January 4th, between 12-3 to check out this great apartment.
