Homemade Grapenut Ice Cream

I had a bunch of gift cards, so I got it in my head to get an ice cream maker that doesn’t require salt, ice, or for the bowl to be put in the freezer. Just pour in the custard, turn a dial, and walk away.
It was easy. Dangerously easy.
The ice cream I made tonight is loosely based on the vanilla ice cream recipe from the Martha Stewart web site. Instead of six egg yolks, I used 8. I didn’t use vanilla beans either…not even real vanilla…imitation. Look, it’s what I had, aight? I got a little overzealous with the grapenuts, but I like the cereal, so that’s ok.
So I made the custard last night and let it chill until this evening. I poured it into the machine, turned the dial, walked away. From all the reviews I read from about this machine, it typically takes about 60 minutes to turn into ice cream. This one only took about 30. I think it’s because the custard started off very cold.
I can not even begin to tell you how rich and dense this ice cream is. It has to be more like gelato. It’s ridiculous! Next time I make this, I would only use 6 eggs, because this is just too rich for me (don’t get it twisted though, I’mma still eat it!), I’d also add a touch more sugar, and less grapenuts. I’d also like to experiment with using Splenda instead of sugar….and maybe trying to make a vegan "ice cream" from soy milk/yourt.
Anyway, when the machine was done, the ice cream was a little more firm than soft serve. I spooned it into individual containers to ripen overnight in the freezer.
Overall though, I’m very happy with the results. I’m so used to having to break out the ice, salt, and drama when making a frozen treat. I can’t believe it was so easy this time!
