For State of the Art, Inc., an Academy Award® winning education and health communication company (Washington, DC), hsr/ny Mixer Bill Higley worked closely with actress Julianna Margulies (E.R. and The Grid), who gave voice to the 40 minute documentary, Autism Is A World. The film, which was produced and directed by Gerardine Wurzburg, Academy Award winner for Educating Peter, will have a limited theatrical release in Los Angeles beginning August 20 and is scheduled to air on CNN in 2005.

The documentary is about Sue who is autistic. She was diagnosed and treated as mentally retarded until the age of 13 when she began to communicate using a keyboard. When you meet her, she does not make eye contact. She obsessively attacks your buttons, endlessly stands at the faucet and watches water pour over her hand. You would not approach this person. But the documentary takes the viewer on a journey into her mind, into her world and her obsessions. Autism Is A World explores Sue’s world, her writings, and the remarkable friendships she has created while in college.

Lensed in and around Whittier, CA where Sue makes her home, Autism Is A World was produced by State of the Art, Inc. and Director/Producer Gerardine Wurzburg, Co-Producer Douglas Biklen, Executive Producer Sid Bedingfield, Supervising Producer Jennifer Hyde, Executive Director Jody Gottlieb and Associate Producer Elissa Ewalt.

Bill Higley utilized Digidesign Pro Tools in the completion of this assignment.

The offline editorial was handled by Editors Barbara Ballow and Anny Meza of State of the Art, Inc.

The online was completed by Editor John Cooke of CNN Productions (Atlanta, GA).

A musical underscore was composed by John Keltonic of JDK Productions (Richmond, VA).
